National Service Scheme (NSS)
About National Service Scheme:
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It offers students in the 11th and 12th grades, as well as those in technical institutions, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs across Indian schools, colleges, and universities, the chance to participate in various community service activities and programs initiated by the government. The primary goal of NSS is to give young students practical experience in community service. Since its launch in 1969, NSS has grown from 40,000 to over 3.8 million student volunteers by March 2018, actively participating in diverse service initiatives through universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions across India.
Objectives:
The primary objectives of NSS are to:
- Gain an understanding of the community they serve;
- Develop self-awareness in relation to their role within the community;
- Identify community needs and problems, actively engaging in solutions;
- Foster a sense of social and civic responsibility;
- Apply their knowledge to address individual and community challenges effectively;
- Build skills for group living and sharing responsibilities;
- Learn techniques to mobilize community involvement;
- Cultivate leadership qualities and a democratic outlook;
- Strengthen their ability to respond to emergencies and natural disasters;
- Promote national integration and social harmony.
The motto:
The motto of the National Service Scheme, ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’, embodies the spirit of democratic living and emphasizes the importance of selfless service, respect for others' perspectives, and empathy toward fellow human beings. It highlights the principle that an individual's well-being is closely tied to the welfare of society as a whole. Thus, NSS aims to put this motto into practice in its daily activities and programs.
NSS symbol
The symbol of the National Service Scheme, featured on the cover of this manual, is inspired by the 'Rath' wheel of the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha. These massive wheels represent the cycles of creation, preservation, and liberation, symbolizing life's ongoing movement through time and space. The simplified design of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily emphasizes movement, representing the progressive flow of life. It reflects both continuity and change, embodying NSS's continuous efforts toward social transformation and upliftment.
NSS Day
NSS was officially launched on 24th September 1969, marking the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation. Since then, 24th September is celebrated annually as NSS Day, featuring various programs and activities to commemorate the occasion.
